New Delhi: Travelers commuting between Delhi and Gurugram may soon find relief from congestion as the tunnel connecting Dwarka Expressway to Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport is expected to open by the end of May, a long-awaited development. This is likely to reduce traffic pressure on National Highway-48, which connects both cities. According to News 18 Hindi, this 3.5-kilometer-long tunnel has been constructed under advanced engineering standards. A war room has also been set up in this tunnel for CCTV surveillance and real-time monitoring, along with modern security infrastructure.

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari announced on Monday, April 7 that the Centre is working on a comprehensive mobility plan, including the construction of an elevated corridor from Dhaula Kuan to Manesar.

During a meeting with Union Minister of State Rao Inderjit Singh, Gadkari laid out a series of infrastructure projects aimed at reducing traffic congestion and improving connectivity across Delhi, Gurgaon, and surrounding districts. He confirmed that a feasibility study has been commissioned for several proposed flyovers and tunnel corridors, with officials directed to submit detailed reports within three months.

Once this special tunnel is operational, traffic between major areas like Gurugram, Vasant Kunj, Dwarka, and Alipur will become easier and commuters will be relieved from traffic hassles.

This 3.6-kilometer-long tunnel on the Delhi-Dwarka Expressway is 8 lanes wide. Notably, it will be the widest tunnel of its kind in India, constructed beneath the IGI Airport complex, providing a direct route to Singhu Border in Alipur. Hundreds of vehicles can pass through this tunnel every minute. Based on traffic flow, its capacity could exceed 10,000 vehicles per hour.

This will facilitate easy travel from Gurugram, Faridabad, and Manesar to northern destinations like Sonipat, Panipat, and Chandigarh. Union Minister of State Rao Indrajeet Singh stated that the Minister of Road Transport and Highways directed NHAI to prepare a detailed report on the current traffic situation between Gurugram and Delhi and present it within three months.
