The Indian embassies in Myanmar and Thailand worked with local authorities to ensure their safe return.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) successfully rescued and brought back 283 Indian citizens who had fallen victim to fake job offers in Myanmar. The rescued individuals were flown home on an Indian Air Force aircraft. Union Minister Bandi Sanjay shared that out of the 283 rescued Indians, at least 42 are from the Telugu states.

These individuals were tricked with fake job offers and later sold to fraudulent call centres involved in cyber scams across Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar. According to the MEA, they were forced to take part in cybercrime and other illegal activities at scam centres located near the Myanmar-Thailand border.

The Myanmar army played a key role in rescuing them.

The Indian embassies in Myanmar and Thailand worked with local authorities to ensure their safe return. The rescued individuals were first brought to Mae Sot, a city in Thailand, before being flown to Delhi.

This incident highlights the dangers of the Golden Triangle Region, a notorious hub for cybercrime where such fraudulent call centres are known to operate.

In December last year, authorities arrested an agent named Kamran Haider, also known as Zaidi, in Hyderabad for allegedly tricking several young Indians into working for fraudulent schemes. Haider, who had a Rs. 2 lakh reward on his head, was caught after a 2,500-km chase.
