Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation Commissioner Indu Rani Jakhar has ordered the formation of two committees to investigate the case of a 26-year-old woman who died after childbirth at Shashtri Nagar Hospital in Dombivli on Thursday. KDMC officials stated that one committee, headed by the District Surgeon of Thane, will conduct a medical inquiry to determine whether any errors occurred during the operation. The second committee will investigate potential administrative lapses in the matter.

An official from KDMC mentioned that a team of district surgeons from Thane visited Shashtri Nagar Hospital to begin the investigation on Friday. The team assured that strict action would be taken against those found guilty of any malpractice during the operation.

The deceased woman, Suvarna Sarode, 26, lived with her husband and family in Motagaon village in Dombivli. On February 11, she began experiencing labor pains and was admitted to Shashtri Nagar Hospital, which is run by the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation for delivery.

According to KDMC officials, the woman’s first delivery was performed via cesarean section. The doctor decided to conduct a cesarean delivery again on February 12. Afterward, both the woman’s and the baby’s health were stable, and they were moved to the general ward.

KDMC stated that after the initial procedure, the woman’s labor pains resumed, and her health deteriorated. A gynecologist performed another surgery, and treatment was administered. Despite this, her health worsened again on Thursday at 2 AM, and she passed away at 2:26 PM.

Avinash Sarode, the husband of the deceased, said, “We will not accept Suvarna’s body until the report comes or an FIR is registered against the doctors and medical staff involved in the operation. They removed her uterus without my family’s consent. We are seeking justice.”

Following Suvarna’s death, her family and relatives staged a protest at the hospital, demanding that an FIR be filed against the doctor. The police were deployed outside the hospital to maintain law and order and prevent any untoward incidents.

Deepa Shukla, a Medical Officer from the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation, stated, “Two separate teams have been formed for this matter. One will be an inquiry led by the district surgeon, while the second will be an internal inquiry conducted by KDMC. After a 36-hour protest, it was called off after KDMC assured a fair investigation by the district surgeon’s team.”

Dipesh Mhatre, a leader from the Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray faction in Kalyan, added, “We, along with opposition parties including MNS, staged a protest with the woman’s family members for the past 36 hours, demanding justice. The family alleges that this incident occurred due to negligence by the hospital.”
