Google Chrome Just Got a Lot Faster on Android Devices

Google has unveiled significant performance improvements in its Chrome browser for Android. The company claims to achieve the best-in-class scores on the Speedometer benchmark. So, users will now experience a faster and smoother web experiences on mobile devices.

Speedometer is an industry-standard benchmark developed collaboratively by leading web browser engines. Google says that since the release of Chrome M112, Speedometer 2.1 scores on Android devices have more than doubled, especially on high-end Android devices.

Chrome Speedometer 2.1 scores on Android devices

For achieving improved performance, the company has mainly did three things. The first thing is build optimisation. Before understating the build optimisation, you need to first understand that Android device ecosystem is diverse. Entry-devices aren’t powerful while the premium devices pack powerful processor. All app developers ship the same app for all Android devices. With Chrome M113, Google will ship a high-performance version targeting premium Android devices. This high-performance version can take full advantage of their advanced hardware.

Google has also improved the performance of its JavaScript and web rendering engines, V8 and Blink. It will improve code execution efficiency.

Google has also worked closely with Qualcomm to optimize Chrome’s interaction with Snapdragon chipsets. On the Snapdragon 8 Elite platform, Speedometer 3.0 scores improved by 60-80%.

Google also boasts that the results are not just about benchmarks. It is also noticeable in real-world usage. For example, loading a Google Docs document on the Pixel Tablet is now over 50% faster compared to earlier versions. Users will experience faster page loads, smoother interactions, and improved power efficiency.
