It has been one month since Maharashtra lost one of its most influential political figures, Ajit Pawar, in a tragic plane crash in Pune district’s Baramati on January 28. His sudden demise not only left a personal void for his family and supporters but also triggered significant political developments across the state. We take a look at seven key developments that unfolded in the month following his death.

1. Sunetra Pawar Takes Oath As Deputy Chief Minister

Sunetra Pawar, the wife of Ajit Pawar, was unanimously elected as the Legislature Party leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on January 31. On the same day, she took oath as Maharashtra’s first woman Deputy Chief Minister. She was given charge of the Excise, Sports and Youth Welfare, and Minorities Development ministries. However, the Finance and Planning portfolios, which her husband handled, were retained by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

2. Sunetra Pawar Takes Charge As Pune District Guardian Minister

Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar was named Pune district’s Guardian Minister on February 3. Her husband, Ajit Pawar, was Pune’s longest-serving Guardian Minister. It was reported that Maharashtra Minister of Higher and Technical Education Chandrakant Patil, who is currently the Guardian Minister of Sangli district, was likely to be given the additional responsibility of Pune. However, that did not happen.

3. Sunetra Pawar Elected As NCP’s National President

Sunetra Pawar was elected as the NCP’s new National President on February 26. She said the party was her family and that taking over the new role was a painful moment for her, but one that also carried great responsibility. “I have seen Ajitdada strive throughout his life for the development of Maharashtra. We will not let his dream remain unfulfilled. Together, we will accomplish it,” she said, her voice choking with emotion as she recalled his contribution.

4. Parth Pawar Set To Enter Rajya Sabha; Sunetra Pawar To Contest Baramati Assembly Bypoll

Ajit Pawar’s elder son, Parth Pawar, is set to enter the Rajya Sabha. Elections to 37 Rajya Sabha seats, including seven from Maharashtra, are scheduled for March 16. Of the seven seats, the Mahayuti, based on its current strength in the Assembly, can secure six. Of these, the BJP is likely to claim three, leaving two to Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena and one to the NCP. This lone seat is likely to be given to Parth Pawar. Meanwhile, Sunetra Pawar, who is currently neither an MLC nor an MLA, will have to get elected to either of the two Houses of the state legislature within six months. Hence, she is expected to contest the Baramati Assembly bypoll whenever it is announced by the State Election Commission.

5. NCP Sweeps Pune Zilla Parishad Polls

The NCP swept the Pune Zilla Parishad elections with a resounding majority. Out of the total 73 seats, the NCP won 51. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) finished a distant second with 10 seats. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena won five seats, Shiv Sena (UBT) clinched six, and NCP-SP bagged one seat. The elections were held on Saturday, February 7. They were earlier scheduled for February 5 but were postponed following the death of Ajit Pawar.

6. NCP Merger Talks Fizzle

Senior NCP-SP leader Jayant Patil, on February 14, claimed that exactly 11 rounds of discussions and meetings had taken place with Ajit Pawar regarding the merger of the two NCP factions. NCP-SP chief Sharad Pawar added that the merger date had been fixed for February 12. NCP-SP MLA Rohit Pawar went a step further and claimed that Shirur MP Amol Kolhe was set to be named the state chief of the NCP after the merger, with Ajit Pawar at the helm of the party nationally. However, the merger talks have since fizzled out, with NCP state chief Sunil Tatkare making it clear that the party is committed to the NDA.

7. Rohit Pawar Demands FIR

Ajit Pawar’s nephew and NCP-SP MLA Rohit Pawar has been questioning the circumstances surrounding the crash and demanding an FIR against VSR Ventures, the company that operated the aircraft, for alleged negligence. On February 27, he met Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and submitted three letters, pressing for a comprehensive technical and criminal investigation into the accident, as well as rehabilitation for the families of those killed. Meanwhile, the Crime Investigation Department (CID) has said that the focus of its probe is to ascertain whether sabotage or criminal negligence led to the tragedy.

Kolkata: The Election Commission (EC) on Saturday, February 28, started publishing the post-SIR electoral rolls in West Bengal in phases, as officials put up hard copies of the list in some districts such as Bankura.

Till reports last received, the list was yet to be made available online on the designated EC portals and mobile app.

No clarity was yet received on the total number of deletions from the draft rolls, but EC sources said that names of over 1.35 lakh voters may have been deleted from Bankura district.

The publication of the list will classify 7.08 crore electors as ‘approved’, ‘deleted’ or ‘under adjudication’, the last category signifying those whose names are currently being scrutinised by judicial officers and whose inclusion or deletion will be determined in the subsequent supplementary lists.

The SIR process in West Bengal began on November 4 last year with the distribution of enumeration forms among voters. The EC took 116 days to provisionally complete the exercise and publish the final but incomplete list amid political turbulence, revision of document verification rules and legal challenges.

The draft rolls published on December 16 saw the electorate shrink from 7.66 crore — to whom enumeration forms were distributed based on the appearance of names in the state’s electoral rolls till August 2025, to 7.08 crore, with over 58 lakh names deleted due to death, migration, duplication or untraceability.

The second phase covered hearings for 1.67 crore electors, 1.36 crore flagged for ‘logical discrepancies’ and 31 lakh lacking mapping. Around 60 lakh voters remain under adjudication on grounds of ‘logical discrepancy’ in their enumeration forms.

The Special Intensive Revision (SIR), the first such statewide exercise since 2002, was conceived by the Election Commission as a statutory clean-up ahead of a major election.

Sheopur (Madhya Pradesh): Madhya Pradesh’s Kuno National Park welcomed nine new Cheetahs from Botswana on Saturday, increasing the total number of wild cats in the state to 48. Union Environment and Forest Minister Bhupender Yadav symbolically released Cheetahs into special qurantine enclosures as they landed after over 7k km long journey.

Out of nine, six are female cheetahs and three are males.

This is the second wildlife achievement in a week after Cheetah Gamini gave birth to 4 cubs at Kuno National Park. 

This is the third time Kuno has embraced a batch of Cheetahs from foreign countries. The first historic moment took place on September 17, 2022 when 8 Cheetahs were brought from Namibia.

Later, on February 18, 2023, the second batch brought 12 Cheetahs from South Africa itself. 

Botswana Cheetahs travel 7.6k kms

This time, the third batch of 9 Cheetahs travelled approximately 7.6k kilometers to arrive at Kuno National Park.

The cheetahs completed a nearly 12-hour flight and first landed at the Air Force Station in Gwalior. From there, three Air Force helicopters transported them to Kuno National Park.

Union Environment and Forest Minister Bhupender Yadav was present at Kuno during the arrival. He symbolically released the cheetahs into special quarantine enclosures by turning the handle of the crates one by one.

Wildlife experts said this will improve the gender balance at Kuno and increase future breeding chances. After the arrival, Kuno now has 18 adult female and 16 adult male cheetahs.

All 9 cheetahs will stay in special quarantine enclosures for about one month under expert supervision.

Kuno to witness genetic diversity 

After cheetahs from Namibia and South Africa, this is the first group from Botswana. Experts believe that bringing cheetahs from three different countries will improve genetic diversity and strengthen the long-term success of the project.

Wildlife officials say the arrival of cheetahs from Botswana marks another important step in making the Cheetah Project a long-term success story for India.

Mumbai: NCP Supremo Sharad Pawar was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai on Saturday, days after being discharged from a Pune hospital following treatment for dehydration.

BJP leader Ashish Shelar reportedly visited him to enquire about Pawar’s health, while Shiv Sena UBT leader Sanjay Raut had met him a day earlier to check on his condition, accordnig to an ABP News report.

Discharged From Pune Hospital Earlier This Week

The 85-year-old Rajya Sabha MP was discharged from Ruby Hall Clinic on Wednesday morning after being treated for mild dehydration, hospital authorities said.

Pawar was admitted last Sunday after complaining of dehydration, along with a mild cough and vomiting. He remained hospitalised for three days and responded well to treatment, according to Dr Purvez Grant, chief cardiologist and chairman and managing trustee of Ruby Hall Clinic.

He was treated by Dr Grant along with consultant physician Dr Abhijit Lodha and Dr Simon Grant. During his stay, doctors conducted a CT scan and blood tests, all of which returned normal results. As part of the treatment, Pawar was administered intravenous fluids and prescribed antibiotics as a precautionary measure.

Doctors Advise Rest & Limited Public Engagements

Dr Grant said Pawar was doing well and had already travelled to Mumbai. He has been advised to rest for the next two to three days before resuming his regular routine.

According to doctors, the episode was likely caused by reduced water intake, leading to mild dehydration and weakness, conditions described as common at his age. Pawar has been prescribed medication for a few days and advised to return for a follow-up after 15 days. Doctors have also recommended limiting outdoor engagements, noting that immunity naturally declines with age.

Earlier this month, Sharad Pawar had also been admitted to Ruby Hall Clinic on February 9 with chest congestion and breathing difficulties. He was treated successfully and discharged on February 14.

Maharashtra Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule remembered the late Ajit Pawar at a function in Pune recently.

In a segment, when host Avdhoot Gupte asked Bawankule to dial a person whom he wished to speak to — someone who is no longer alive — the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader chose Ajit Pawar, who died in a tragic plane crash in Baramati on January 28.

“Respected Ajit Dada, please come back to present the state Budget. Ajit Dada, come back, the people of Maharashtra are waiting,” said an emotional Bawankule.

“This (Ajit Pawar’s passing) is a big loss to Maharashtra. I have seen what the trio of Ajit Pawar, Devendra Fadnavis and Eknath Shinde had envisioned — of making Maharashtra the best state in the country and of ensuring the welfare of each and every citizen in the state. Now Sunetra Pawar (Ajit Pawar’s wife) will support Devendra Fadnavis, but I miss him a lot,” Bawankule added.

Meanwhile, Ajit Pawar’s nephew and NCP-SP MLA, Rohit Pawar, has written to CM Fadnavis seeking conversion of ‘Devgiri’, the official residence of Ajit Pawar for over two decades, into a memorial, while also demanding a time-bound and impartial inquiry into the crash.

Apart from the proposed memorial at Devgiri, he urged the state government to name Baramati Airport, the Pune Ring Road, the Talegaon-Chakan-Shikrapur elevated road and the Pune-Shirur elevated road after Ajit Pawar.

Rohit Pawar said he personally submitted three letters to Fadnavis, pressing for a comprehensive technical and criminal investigation into the accident and rehabilitation of the families of those killed.

Rishi Gupta, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Navi Mumbai-based Fino Payments Bank, has been arrested under the CGST (Central Goods and Services Tax) and SGST (State Goods and Services Tax) Acts, the company said in a regulatory filing late on Friday.

It further said that the investigation did not relate to the bank but pertained to one of its business partners.

“Pursuant to Regulation 30 of the SEBI Listing Regulations, we would like to inform that an arrest has been made of Mr. Rishi Gupta, Managing Director (“MD & CEO”) of Fino Payments Bank Limited (“Bank”) under the provisions of Section 132(1)(a) and 132(1)(i) of the CGST and SGST Act, 2017, respectively, on February 27, 2026,” the lender said in the exchange filing.

Pursuant to the arrest, the bank has appointed its Chief Financial Officer, Ketan Merchant, as the head of the organisation to manage operations in the meantime. The decision was taken in a special board meeting on Friday.

“A special Board Meeting was convened today wherein Mr. Ketan Merchant, Chief Financial Officer of the Bank, was appointed as Head of the Organization by the Board to carry on and oversee the day-to-day operations of the Bank in the absence of Mr. Rishi Gupta, Managing Director & CEO of the Bank, until otherwise resolved by the Board or till Mr. Rishi Gupta resumes office, whichever is earlier,” it said.

Fino Payments Bank is the only payments bank in the country to be listed on the stock exchanges. The lender said that it was cooperating with the authorities to provide all the necessary information and was also taking appropriate measures “to address and overcome the above situation.”

It assured investors that the arrest did not have any material impact on the bank, as the action against Gupta was taken in his personal capacity.

None of the bank’s officials were involved in the matter. In case of any impact in the future, appropriate disclosure will be made to the stock exchanges, it said.
