Petronet LNG shares tank nearly 12 pc

New Delhi: Shares of gas importer Petronet LNG Ltd on Wednesday, March 4, dived nearly 12 per cent amid reports that Qatar, India’s largest supplier of imported natural gas, has declared force majeure on deliveries following a halt in production in the wake of an Iranian drone strike.

The stock tanked 11.69 per cent to Rs 273 on the BSE.

At the NSE, it tumbled 11.95 per cent to Rs 271.75.

Qatar has declared force majeure on deliveries following a halt in production in the wake of an Iranian drone strike — a disruption that has led to a cut in supplies to Indian industry by up to 40 per cent, sources said.

Qatar supplies about 40 per cent of the nearly 27 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) that India imports annually to meet demand across sectors ranging from power generation and fertiliser production to CNG distribution and piped cooking gas networks.

Petronet LNG Ltd has informed gas marketers of Qatar halting its liquefied natural gas production after Iran continued to strike Gulf countries in retaliation for Israeli and US strikes against it, they said.

Shares of Mahanagar Gas tanked 8.50 per cent, Indraprastha Gas dropped 5 per cent, and Gujarat Gas declined 4 per cent on the BSE.

The attacks have also effectively brought oil and LNG shipments through the Strait of Hormuz to a near halt, driving up global energy prices as well as sharply raising war-risk insurance and shipping costs.

Iran controls the Strait — a vital maritime chokepoint through which roughly 50 per cent of India’s crude oil imports and around 54 per cent of its LNG supplies transit. It is the transit for not just LNG from Qatar but also from the UAE.

Sources said Petronet has informed its gas offtakers — GAIL (India) Ltd and Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), about a halt in supplies from Qatar. The gas marketers have, in turn, cut supplies to industries while maintaining flow rates for CNG retailing.

The cuts range from 10 per cent to 40 per cent, they said.

Petronet has long term contract to buy 8.5 million tonnes per annum of LNG from Qatar. Additionally, it buys Qatari LNG from the spot market as well. Besides Petronet, companies such as IOC have LNG import contracts with the UAE.

‘Wanted To Kill Farooq Abdullah For 20 Years,’ Says 63-YO Kamal Singh Jamwal, Who Fired Shot At Ex-J&K CM At Jammu Wedding – WATCH |

Jammu: A man who attempted to shoot former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah at a wedding function in Jammu on Wednesday has told police he had been planning to kill the veteran leader for nearly two decades. Authorities, however, ruled out any terror angle and said the attacker appeared to be under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.

The accused has been identified as 63-year-old Kamal Singh Jamwal, a resident of Jammu. According to police, Jamwal used his licensed firearm during the attempt and was immediately overpowered by security personnel before he could cause harm.

CCTV footage from the wedding venue shows Jamwal approaching Abdullah from behind and pointing a pistol at him from point-blank range. He then fired a shot, which missed the target. Security personnel quickly intervened and restrained the gunman.

Jamwal Confesses On Personal Grudge For Past 2 Decades

During questioning, Jamwal reportedly told cops that he had harboured a personal grudge against the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference leader for the past 20 years. “I wanted to kill Farooq Abdullah for the past 20 years. It was my personal agenda. The weapon is my own, issued to me,” Jamwal told the police, adding that Abdullah was “lucky to survive.”

Officials said Abdullah had attended the wedding to greet a National Conference leader whose son was getting married. The former chief minister had reportedly been at the venue for more than an hour before the shooting attempt took place.

J&K Dy CM Escapes Death Narrowly

Surinder Choudhary, Deputy Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, was also present at the venue during the incident and escaped unharmed. Police said the pistol used in the attack was seized from Jamwal’s possession. Preliminary investigations revealed that the accused owns several shops in the old city area of Jammu and earns rental income from them.

Authorities also said Jamwal appeared to be intoxicated at the time of the attack. Following the incident, he was reportedly beaten by some people present at the wedding venue, including supporters of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference, before being taken into custody. Police have launched further investigation into the incident, though officials have reiterated that no terror links have been found so far.

  • Ukrainian troops share lessons learned from fighting Iran’s Shahed drones

Ukrainian troops share lessons learned from fighting Iran’s Shahed drones

For more than 10 days, Iran has used Shahed drones to target American bases, killing U.S. troops and hitting civilian infrastructure facilities. But long before they flew across the Middle East, Shaheds fired by Russia targeted Ukrainian troops and infrastructure. Special correspondent Jack Hewson reports from Kharkiv, where he spoke with frontline forces who have experience facing the drones.

    Geoff Bennett:

For more than 10 days, Iran has unleashed one weapon in particular at countries that host U.S. troops. Shahed drones have targeted American bases, killing U.S. troops and hitting civilian infrastructure and energy facilities.

But long before they flew across the Middle East, Shaheds fired by Russia targeted Ukrainian troops and infrastructure. We have two looks at the drone threat, starting with special correspondent Jack Hewson, one of the few foreign correspondents who reported from Kharkiv at the beginning of the full-scale invasion.

Jack returns to that Eastern Ukrainian city to meet frontline troops, who have more experience facing Shahed drones than anyone else.

    Jack Hewson:

Kharkiv’s air war doesn’t begin in the city. It starts out here in the fields and villages that lie between the front line and the regional capital.

We’re on our way to a position about 20 kilometers from the Russian line in Izyum in Kharkiv province. And, strangely, even though we’re a long way from Kharkiv, the city itself, this is where air defense actually begins. Shahed fly over this area in the direction of the city, and it’s here that they’re intercepted. And it’s also where they intercept Russian observation drones as well.

Notice the nets. That’s to protect cars like ours. Making this journey more harrowing is the fact that short-range first-person view, or FPV, drones have hit vehicles here. They have an expanded range and are now guided by fiber-optic cable to evade electronic jamming.

    “Asket”:

Everything which is closer than 40 kilometers could be destroyed by Russian drones, by different types of drones, not only FPV drones but Lancet and a lot of other types of Russian drones.

    Jack Hewson:

Drone and missile strikes, many launched from deep inside Russia have hit Kharkiv, Ukraine’s most bombarded city, for years. And it’s only getting worse.

In addition to attack drones, Russian forces fly reconnaissance drones and longer-range Iranian-made Shaheds across this area and into Kharkiv city itself. To counter, Ukraine has developed reconnaissance and interceptor drones of its own and pushed its air defense network out towards the front line, trying to intercept before they reach the city.

They operate from below ground, hiding from Russian recon drones like the ZALA and Orlan. The latter is a direct threat to Kharkiv city, helping to guide missiles and Shahed drones onto their targets. They also threaten frontline troops. We blurred some images at the unit’s request to protect the unit’s operational security.

    “Smile” (through interpreter):

The Orlan knocks out our units. They knock out our people, our equipment. They also actively knock out our artillery. Due to its relatively powerful zoom, it has both optical and digital zoom. It sees very far and it has the ability to help target both guided munitions and artillery. It can target just everything.

    Jack Hewson:

But one of the most difficult targets for these pilots is the Shahed.

Kucheriavyi, Pilot, 115th Ukraine Mech. Brigade (through interpreter): Because it flies low and is very difficult to detect, plus the fall weather conditions, and it simply flies fast.

    Jack Hewson:

Despite the challenges, Ukrainian crews are scoring hits like this one, but for every hit, many more slip through. There is a constant race to keep up with each innovation and counterinnovation in tactics and technology between the Hunter and the hunted.

According to Commander Mer, the evolution continues and, as their crews adapt, so do the Russians.

    “Mer” (through interpreter):

Now the Shaheds are even being equipped with radio-electronic interference systems to interfere with our interceptor. The enemy also plays with the altitude and at the same time he began to launch a much larger number of Shaheds in one group.

That is, before the group consisted of three or four enemy Shaheds. Now this group, their number has increased to eight or nine.

    Jack Hewson:

According to the commander, innovation happens primarily on the battlefield supported by start-ups and NGOs.

    “Mer” (through interpreter):

The state can only provide what has already proven itself and has results. What has proven itself and has results is no longer effective on the battlefield. Such dynamics mean that we have to try. We have to constantly put the latest technologies in place and gamble with what works.

    Jack Hewson:

To understand what they’re up against, the unit takes us to examine one of the drones they have recently brought down. This one had a gasoline-powered propeller motor, allowing it to travel at up to 115 miles an hour, but newer models are presenting bigger challenges.

    “Akusher” (through interpreter):

Their warhead has from 40 to 50 kilograms of explosives, and they have already modified the design of the Shahed itself in the structure and are doubling the warhead.

I would also like to add that they are pioneering using jet engines. True, they haven’t been detected in our zone yet, but these are also their changes, their tactics.

    Jack Hewson:

And with jet-powered Shahed coming to this war, with top speeds of more than 310 miles per hour, Ukraine’s air defense teams will continue to have their work cut out.

For the “PBS News Hour,” I’m Jack Hewson in Kharkiv, Ukraine.

Rupee slumps to all-time low of 92.16 against US dollar

Mumbai: The rupee slumped 67 paise to close at an all-time low of 92.16 against US dollar on Wednesday, March 4, weighed down by spiking crude oil prices in the wake of the Iran crisis.

Forex traders said the dollar index crossed 98 levels on the risk-off situation prevailing all around the globe amid the US-Iran crisis, further pressurising the rupee.

Moreover, massive selling in domestic equity markets and withdrawal of foreign funds further dragged the Indian currency down, they said.

At the interbank foreign exchange, the rupee opened at 92.05 and touched an all-time intraday low of 92.35 against the greenback. The currency ended the session at an all-time low of 92.16 (provisional) against the dollar, registering a steep loss of 67 paise from the previous closing level.

On Monday, March 2, the rupee saw a steep loss of 41 paise to settle at 91.49 against the US dollar. The forex Market was closed on Tuesday on account of Holi.

“A sharp escalation in Middle East conflict and the consequent spike in oil prices have reduced investor risk appetite. Higher oil prices increase inflation concerns and fiscal pressure on India (a major oil importer), leading to selling in bonds and rising yields,” Anil Kumar Bhansali, head of treasury and executive director, Finrex Treasury Advisors LLP, said.

Indore News: West Discom Orders Intensive Drive To Recover Dues In March | FP Photo

Indore (Madhya Pradesh): Madhya Pradesh West Zone Electricity Distribution Company managing director Anup Kumar Singh has directed officials to intensify efforts to recover outstanding electricity dues during the remaining days of March, warning that strict action, including disconnection of power supply, should be taken against defaulters.

Addressing officials of 15 districts through a video conference on Wednesday, Singh said March is crucial for achieving the company’s financial targets.

He instructed all 15 superintending engineers in the company’s jurisdiction, including those in Indore, to make coordinated efforts with their teams to ensure maximum revenue recovery within the remaining days of the financial year.

Singh emphasised that consumers who fail to pay their pending bills even after receiving notices should face action as per rules, including power disconnection.

He said districts such as Indore (city and rural), Ujjain, Dewas, Dhar, Agar, Shajapur and Ratlam need to make special efforts to recover pending dues. Officials were asked to ensure recovery from consumers across all categories, including agricultural, industrial, non-domestic and domestic connections.

The managing director also instructed the heads of the Smart Meter Cell and Vigilance Cell to monitor the recovery drive and conduct field visits to review action being taken against defaulters.

The commercial wing has been directed to set daily revenue targets for each circle and division and review progress regularly, while ensuring eligible consumers benefit from the company’s settlement scheme.

With summer approaching, Singh also stressed the need to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply to drinking water sources so that water supply systems are not affected.

Senior officials, including chief general manager Prakash Singh Chauhan and chief engineers Sushma Gangrade, Rajesh Chandra Jain and BL Chauhan, along with other officers, were present during the meeting.

  • DGCA proposes tighter rules for foreign airlines operating in India

DGCA proposes tighter rules for foreign airlines operating in India

New Delhi: The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has proposed to tighten rules for foreign airlines operating to and from India, including mandatory digital registration, stronger legal accountability for local representatives, and putting in place a formal passenger grievance reporting system.

The DGCA on Wednesday issued a draft aeronautical information circular, which seeks to strengthen the civil aviation regulator’s oversight of foreign airlines.

The proposal includes a shift to a digital-first compliance system through the eGovernance of Civil Aviation (eGCA) portal, the DGCA’s online platform used for licensing, approvals, and regulatory filings.

Add as a preferred source on Google

Under the proposed framework, foreign airlines will have to obtain unique login credentials by uploading authenticated documents related to their incorporation and operational approvals.

Portal access will be activated only after the regulator verifies the credentials and competence of the airline’s designated “local representative” in India.

The draft circular proposes to make the local representative of the airline more accountable to the regulator. Under the proposed rules, the representative must either be an Indian national or a registered Indian entity and will be responsible for ensuring regulatory compliance on behalf of the airline.

    MS Admissions 2026-27MS Admissions 2026-27

The proposal requires the representative to report any aviation incident to the DGCA within four hours, maintain updated information on the eGCA portal at all times, and ensure that any change in representation is completed within prescribed deadlines. For the first time, the proposed framework would make the airline itself legally liable for any lapses committed by its local representative.

The airline shall be responsible for all acts or omissions done by the local representative in discharge of its responsibilities assigned by the airline and shall immediately replace the local representative if, at any point in time, the airline or DGCA observes frequent lapses, the draft observed.

The draft also introduces the concept of “deemed suspension” of an airline’s authorisation to operate to specific airports if those approvals remain unused for an extended period.

Under the proposal, if a foreign carrier does not operate flights to a particular Indian airport for four consecutive International Air Transport Association (IATA) seasons, the regulator can suspend the airport authorisation.

The IATA seasons refer to the global airline industry’s two scheduling periods each year — summer and winter — during which airlines plan flight schedules and slot usage worldwide.

In addition, the draft circular outlines a new passenger grievance redress mechanism for foreign carriers operating in India. The mechanism would require airlines to maintain a formal grievance register and submit periodic reports to the DGCA to ensure greater transparency and consumer protection in handling passenger complaints.

The DGCA has set an April 9 deadline for comments on the draft proposal from stakeholders, which will be taken into consideration before the new compliance framework is finalised.

  • News Wrap: Tornadoes kill at least 2 in Indiana

News Wrap: Tornadoes kill at least 2 in Indiana

In our news wrap Wednesday, a series of tornadoes killed at least two people in Indiana and leveled homes and businesses in Illinois, the Department of Homeland Security reactivated its Global Entry program and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer was warned of the “reputational risk” in appointing Peter Mandelson as U.S. Ambassador due to his ties to Jeffrey Epstein.

    Geoff Bennett:

In the day’s other headlines: A series of tornadoes killed at least two people in Northwestern Indiana and leveled homes and businesses in neighboring Illinois. An elderly couple was killed when a tornado struck their home in Lake Village, Indiana. Fire officials there say at least 10 others were injured.

And in Kankakee, Illinois, a tornado flattened entire neighborhoods. Residents were left in shock, while the city’s mayor expressed relief that lives were spared.

    Woman:

It was just devastation. It reminded me of the movie “Twister.”

Christopher Curtis, Mayor of Kankakee, Illinois: We’re very fortunate that where the tornado did come through at the city of Kankakee was mostly our commercial industrial area, and not heavy residential area, but it has suffered significant damage.

    Geoff Bennett:

That same weather system swamped roads in places in and around Grand Rapids, Michigan, and reportedly dropped hail the size of golf balls. And there’s more bad weather ahead. Widespread storms with damaging winds will stretch from Houston, Texas, all the way through the mid-Atlantic and up to Philadelphia.

The Department of Homeland Security reactivated its global entry program early this morning. The fast-track service for preapproved travelers entering the U.S. was paused last month because of the partial government shutdown.

A DHS spokesperson said the decision was intended to help alleviate the disruptions to travelers caused by the shutdown. A handful of U.S. airports have seen long security lines and delays lasting for hours in recent days amid a shortage of airport screeners.

U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer was warned of the reputational risk in appointing Peter Mandelson as U.S. ambassador due to his ties to Jeffrey Epstein. That’s according to documents released today by the British government. The 147-page report lays out Mandelson’s ties to Epstein, as well as unrelated financial issues.

Mandelson was arrested last month on suspicion of misconduct in public office. He denies any wrongdoing and has not been charged. Cabinet minister Darren Jones said the government fell short in its due diligence of Mandelson and that Epstein’s victims are their first priority.

Darren Jones, Chief Secretary to U.K. Prime Minister: Peter Mandelson’s behavior was an insult to them and their suffering. I am therefore sorry that these events leave those victims with no choice but to relive their horrors with still too little justice being served.

    Geoff Bennett:

Meantime, in Washington, Epstein’s longtime accountant Richard Kahn told lawmakers today that he was, in his words, not aware of the nature or extent of Epstein’s abuse until after his death.

That’s according to opening remarks obtained by reporters ahead of a closed-door deposition by the House Oversight Committee. Kahn remains an executor of Epstein’s estate and also denies any wrongdoing.

Seven members of Iran’s national women’s soccer team remain in Australia, an Australian government official said today. That’s as the rest of their teammates head back to a country now at the center of a widening war. The players had traveled to Australia for the Asian Women’s Cup just before the war started.

Six of the women have accepted humanitarian visas that will allow them to remain in Australia for good. A seventh who had initially sought asylum has since decided to return to Iran, a decision supported by Australia’s home affairs minister.

Tony Burke, Australia Home Affairs Minister:

In Australia, people are able to change their mind. People are able to travel. And so we respect the context in which she has made that decision. For every member of this delegation, they have been shown a respect by Australia that would be unfamiliar to them in Iran.

    Geoff Bennett:

Also today, Iran’s sports minister told state television that — quote — “under no circumstances” would the men’s team participate in this summer’s soccer World Cup, which is being hosted by the U.S., Mexico and Canada.

Those comments came hours after FIFA’s president Gianni Infantino said that President Trump told him Iran would be welcome.

On Wall Street today, stocks ended mixed as oil prices turned higher and investors digested the latest report on inflation. The Dow Jones industrial average fell nearly 300 points on the day. The Nasdaq managed a slight gain of almost 20 points. The S&P 500 closed just barely in the red.
