If the dam breaks due to massive earthquake, it will be empty in 22 minutes and within 12 hours it will engulf Delhi NCR including Meerut.
A few days ago, a powerful earthquake of magnitude 4.3 hit Delhi and adjacent NCR at around 5.36 am. The tremors were so strong that people came out of their houses in fear. The epicentre of the quake was New Delhi. According to geologists, if the intensity of the earthquake had been a little more, there could have been a major loss. As the Delhi-NCR region and Uttarakhand fall in seismic zone 5, the danger is greater as Tehri Dam, one of the world’s largest dams, is also located here. The geologists stated that if an earthquake of high intensity occurs, the powerful tremors can damage or break the dam, leading to devastation and the flooding of the Delhi-NCR region.
The Tehri city had to be submerged to build the Tehri Dam. As many as 36 villages were completely submerged with 88 partially affected. Built for Tehri Hydroelectric Project, the dam was built in 2006 and spread over an area of 42 kms. If it breaks due to a massive earthquake, it will be empty in 22 minutes and within 12 hours it will engulf Delhi NCR including Meerut.
The entire city will be submerged under 250 feet of water.
Rishikesh And Haridwar Will Submerge In One Hour
If it happens, two big cities of Uttarakhand – Rishikesh and Haridwar – will submerge in just an hour. Cities like – Meerut, Bijnor and Bulandshahr will be submerged in 12 hours. Geologists said that if Tehri Dam breaks, it will be the biggest natural disaster in the world.
