BMC Begins Final Phase Repairs On Parel TT Flyover Before Monsoon

BMC Begins Final Phase Repairs On Parel TT Flyover Before Monsoon | Representational Image

Mumbai: The BMC has begun the final phase of repair work on the Parel TT Flyover this month. To minimize traffic disruption, the repairs are being carried out in phases with one lane closed at a time. The ongoing work includes reducing expansion joints of bridge and resurfacing, for which the northbound lane has currently been closed to traffic. Once this phase is completed, work on the south bound side will begin immediately. The entire repair work is expected to be completed before the monsoon season.

Built in 1980, the Parel TT flyover is a key artery on Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Road, crucial for easing traffic at a busy junction. Despite its importance, it frequently experiences heavy congestion during peak hours, with commuters taking over 10 minutes to cover just 100 metres. Disruptions here ripple out to areas like Bhoiwada and Lalbaug. Over time, the deterioration of its numerous expansion joints has made the surface uneven, resulting in a bumpy ride and a higher risk of potholes, particularly during the monsoon season.

    Also Watch:

If the flyover were fully closed, surrounding roads and alternate routes like Tilak Bridge in Dadar would face severe congestion, with no major roads to absorb the traffic. To avoid disruptions, the BMC carried out phased repairs, including structural work and bearing replacements. “We vacated the solid waste management chowkies and health centres beneath the flyover to strengthen it. A key part of the project is reducing expansion joints from 22 to 9 by creating deck continuity, and replacing asphalt with concrete, which will ensure a smoother and more stable ride, especially during the monsoon,” said a senior civic official.

“The work started a month ago with traffic police approval, and we aim to complete it ahead of schedule before the monsoon to avoid inconvenience,” the official added. The BMC began the tender process for repairing and strengthening the flyover in 2024, with the project estimated to cost around Rs. 17 crore. As per the notification from Mumbai Traffic Police, the northbound side of the flyover will be fully closed to all vehicles from March 9 to April 15, while the southbound side will remain closed from April 16 to May 31.

Maharashtra Cracks Down On Drug Trafficking With 14 MCOCA Cases, Anti-Narcotic Task Force On High Alert

Maharashtra has taken strict action against drug trafficking, registering cases under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) in 14 cases so far, Minister of State for Home Yogesh Kadam informed the Maharashtra Legislative Council during Question Hour. | File Pic

Mumbai: Maharashtra has taken strict action against drug trafficking, registering cases under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) in 14 cases so far, Minister of State for Home Yogesh Kadam informed the Maharashtra Legislative Council during Question Hour.

The minister said the state government is following a “zero tolerance” policy against narcotics and organised drug networks.

The issue was raised by MLC Shashikant Shinde, while members Satej Patil, Anil Parab and Pravin Darekar asked supplementary questions.

    Anti-Narcotic Task Force Established

Kadam said the government has established an Anti-Narcotic Task Force to curb the growing drug menace in the state. The task force is responsible for taking action against drug-related crimes and identifying the entire supply chain behind narcotics trafficking.

He added that strict action is being taken not only against the main accused in drug rackets but also against those who provide direct or indirect assistance. Authorities are also targeting the supply chain of narcotics, including those supplying raw materials for drug production, and taking action under MCOCA where necessary.

    Satara Drug Manufacturing Racket Busted

Referring to a recent case in Jawali taluka, Satara district, Maharashtra, India, the minister said 11 accused have been arrested and booked under MCOCA in connection with a drug manufacturing racket.

Investigations have revealed that in some instances drugs were being produced secretly in closed factories or sheds in rural areas. As a result, police and the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) have launched joint inspections of such premises.

Kadam said the police machinery has also been put on high alert in rural areas to prevent illegal drug production and trafficking.

116 Documents Seized, 25 Refuse To Surrender As Mayor Ritu Tawde Orders Monthly Reviews

In the fake birth certificates scam in Mumbai, allegedly being issued to illegal Bangladeshis, following which mayor Ritu Tawde had asked for recheck of all birth certificates issued post 2016. | Devashri Bhujbal

Mumbai: In the fake birth certificates scam in Mumbai, allegedly being issued to illegal Bangladeshis, following which mayor Ritu Tawde had asked for recheck of all birth certificates issued post 2016, the BMC’s health department submitted a report to the mayor on Wednesday, stating that 116 birth certificates have been seized and records are permanently deleted, while some holders have refused to handover.

237 Delayed Certificates Under Scrutiny in M-East Ward

The report said that out of total 237 delayed birth certificates, alleged as fake certificates were issued in the Govandi – Mankhurd area by M-East ward, of which 116 original birth certificates has been seized by the administration and records are deleted, while 25 people have refused to handover the original birth certificates. For the remaining 96 birth certificates, the administration is yet to take actions.

The department also informed the mayor that apart from M-East ward, no other wards so far have found to have issued delayed or fake birth certificates issued.

Kirit Somaiya First Exposed the Scam Last Year

The fake birth certificate scam in Mumbai was brought to light by BJP leader Kirit Somaiya last year, following which two civic health officers have been suspended. Somaiya held a follow-up meeting with Tawde on Wednesday, when the health department officials were present. Somaiya said that in the last two years, in 23 wards in Mumbai, there are 48 cases where birth certificates are issued being the age of one.

Mayor Tawde said that henceforth a review meeting will be held every month over this issue with the health department. “Birth registration and issuance of certificates is not just a matter of issuing government documents, but is directly related to national security. When public representatives find errors in the process and bring all the information to us on their own, it is necessary to take all necessary action. The administration should set up all the necessary mechanisms for this. The process of birth registration and certificates, as well as delayed birth registration, will be reviewed every month from now on,” the mayor said.

The leaders have also been following up on eradicating the illegal Bangladeshi hawkers from Mumbai, and the administration was asked to check birth certificates of the hawkers. However, speaking with the GPlus, officials from the health department said that checking birth certificates of hawkers (licenced or unliscned) does not fall under their department, and the licence department needs to do the needful. “If the licences department needs help from the health department, we will provide,” an official said.

Owaisi questions legitimacy of BJP MP chairing no-confidence motion

New Delhi: All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Tuesday, March 10, raised a point of order in Parliament, questioning the legality of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Jagdambika Pal chairing the no-confidence proceedings.

Owaisi said that Pal, who was appointed by the Speaker, cannot preside over the no-confidence motion debate, citing Articles 95 and 96 of the Constitution.

Articles 95 and 96 of the Constitution deal with the duties of both the Speaker and Deputy Speaker, and who presides over the meeting when one of the offices is vacant or when a resolution for removal is under consideration.

“The speaker has a direct person of interest in the outcome and that interest disqualifies him from acts that shape these proceedings,” the Hyderabad MP said on Pal chairing the no-confidence motion passed by the Opposition.

He argued that the government is finding loopholes to bypass mandatory constitutional requirements. Owaisi pointed out the absence of a Deputy Speaker, who is appointed from a party other than the ruling party, and said that Rule 10 cannot override the constitutional provisions.

Rule 10 of the Lok Sabha permits the Speaker to nominate a Panel of Chairpersons to preside over the proceedings in the absence of both the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker.

    MS Admissions 2026-27MS Admissions 2026-27

The AIMIM chief accused the government of making a “constitutional mess.”

“Sir, you (MP Jagdambika Pal) are sitting in the chair. You have been appointed by the Speaker. I am of the opinion that you cannot sit over there and take up these proceedings. The House stand should be taken. Rule 10 cannot overtake Articles 95 and 96 of the Constitution, sir. This government has made a constitutional mess,” he said.

  • Maharashtra Forms SIT To Probe Land Acquisition Irregularities In Jalgaon Highway Projects, Six Government Departments Under Scanner

Maharashtra Forms SIT To Probe Land Acquisition Irregularities In Jalgaon Highway Projects, Six Government Departments Under Scanner

Mumbai: Maharashtra Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule on Tuesday announced in the state Assembly that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) will probe alleged irregularities in land acquisition for national highway and other development projects in Jalgaon district.

Senior Officials to Lead Multi-Departmental Investigation

The probe will be conducted under the chairmanship of Divisional Commissioner Praveen Gedam. The SIT will include two IAS officers and one IPS officer to ensure that any criminal aspects of the case are also thoroughly investigated.

The announcement was made after MLA Mangesh Chavan raised the issue through a calling attention motion in the Assembly, pointing to suspected irregularities and the possible involvement of multiple departments.

    Six Departments Under Scrutiny

Bawankule said the scope of the investigation is wide and will cover six departments, including the revenue department, National Highways Authority of India, the stamp duty department, the land acquisition office, the land records department and local talathi offices.

He said the SIT will examine the entire process—from record entries to the preparation of compensation awards—to identify where irregularities may have occurred. The committee will also review land acquisition decisions in nine villages linked to the projects.

Attempt to Defraud Government to be Probed

The minister said that compensation for the acquired land has not yet been distributed, as the government halted the process in time, preventing financial loss to the state.

“Fortunately, the compensation amount has not been disbursed yet, so the government has not suffered any financial loss. However, the SIT will investigate whether there was an attempt to defraud the government and whether project maps were altered to benefit certain individuals,” Bawankule said.

He informed the House that the SIT has been instructed to submit its report within three months, which will then be tabled before the legislature.

During the discussion, MLA Chavan and other members alleged a possible nexus in the case, claiming that attempts were made to claim compensation by planting orchards on land recorded in the name of the Centre or the President. They demanded strict action, including criminal cases and suspension of officials found guilty.

Maharashtra Orders Retired High Court Judge-Led Probe Into College Fee Irregularities Amid Allegations Of Inflated Expenses

The Maharashtra government will constitute an inquiry committee headed by a retired High Court judge to investigate alleged irregularities in the college fee determination process, Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakantdada Patil informed the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday. | X @MahaDGIPR

Mumbai: The Maharashtra government will constitute an inquiry committee headed by a retired High Court judge to investigate alleged irregularities in the college fee determination process, Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakantdada Patil informed the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday.

    MLA’s Suggestion Triggers Government Action

The announcement came in response to a “striking suggestion” raised by MLA Mahesh Shinde during the Assembly proceedings. MLA Prashant Bamb also took part in the discussion on the issue.

Patil said that the government had taken serious note of complaints regarding irregularities in the fee structure proposed by some colleges. To ensure transparency and accountability, the state has decided to appoint an independent committee led by a retired High Court judge to probe the matter.

Fee Regulation Authority Established Following Supreme Court Directive

The minister explained that fee determination in Maharashtra is carried out through the state’s Fee Regulation Authority (FRA), which was established following a directive from the Supreme Court. Under the existing system, colleges are required to submit audited financial statements for the previous academic year. The approved expenditure is divided by the total number of students to determine the fee structure, which remains valid for a period of three years.

However, the government has received complaints alleging that some institutions may have inflated their expenses to justify higher fees. According to Patil, certain colleges have reportedly included salaries of professors who were not actually employed, shown costs for construction projects that remain incomplete, or inflated other operational expenditures.

Strict Action Promised If Large-Scale Irregularities Found

Patil said that if the probe uncovers large-scale financial irregularities, the government will take strict action. This could include the appointment of a Special Investigation Team (SIT), registration of an FIR, or a probe by the Economic Offences Wing (EOW).

He also informed the Assembly that a Deputy Secretary-level officer from the Higher and Technical Education Department will be appointed to supervise and monitor the inquiry process.

The minister reiterated that the state continues to bear the tuition costs of students from Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes and economically weaker families with an annual income of up to ₹8 lakh, particularly benefiting girl students.
