Indian Railways set a milestone by adding the country’s first engineless train in its fleet. On February 15, 2019, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the high-speed train from Delhi, and it continues to serve several passengers daily. This high-speed train is more luxurious than the legendary Shatabdi and Rajdhani Express trains. The train’s name is Vande Bharat Express, formerly known as Train 18. It is an electric train with multiple-unit chair car trainset which is designed and developed by the Indian Railways.

Vande Bharat Train: Top Speed

During the test run, the high-speed train reached its top speed of 183 km/h (114 mph), but the Indian Railways restricted its operational speed to 160 km/h (99 mph) because of track constraints. In July 2023, Indian Railways revealed a new saffron and grey colour scheme for the latest Vande Bharat trains. The Union Minister of Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw said that 25 enhancements have been made to the trains, which include the addition of anti-climbing devices.

As the August 31, 2024 data, over 61 Vande Bharat trains are currently running on tracks, including 16-car trains and thirty-six 8-car trains.
