Taking cognizance of the Free Press Journal report on 24, February, raising concerns about motorists illegally parking their vehicles and taking selfies on the fly-over-bridge running over the Vasai creek on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad National Highway, personnel from the traffic department (Kashimira unit) have started cracking the whip on violators.

Swarms of seagulls have started flocking the shorelines of the Vasai creek near Kashimira, and are seen perched on the railings of the fly-over-bridge on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway. This is attracting the attention of motorists, some stopping over to feed the white-headed migratory birds with all kinds of junk food while clicking selfies, unaware of the fact that it could cause harm to their health due to indigestion and damage to their livers.

Moreover, the feeders were also endangering the lives of other bikers and motorists by illegally parking (bridge is a no parking zone) their vehicles on the highway bridge while the road traffic zips past at a high speed. As per official statistics sourced from the traffic department, 325 motorists have been booked under the relevant sections of the Motor Vehicle Act and were issued challans collectively amounting more than Rs.3.80 lakh for needlessly halting their vehicles for clicking pictures/selfies, causing undue dangers to other road users and obstructing vehicular movement on the creek bridge.

“While first time offenders are fined Rs.500, those repeating the offence are penalized Rs.1,500.” said an official from the traffic department.
