Pune Police claims to ensure public safety. However, a shocking incident has exposed the vulnerability of police personnel themselves. A policeman returning home after a combing operation was brutally assaulted by four intoxicated individuals near Ratna Hospital on Senapati Bapat Road. The incident took place on February 14.
The complainant, identified as Chandrakant Jadhav (42), is a police constable posted at Sahakarnagar Police Station. The accused have been identified as Rupesh Manjrekar, Aniket Ghodke and Abhishek Dongre, while the fourth accused has not been arrested yet. All are residents of the area near SB Road.
According to the police, “Jadhav was returning home on the night of February 14 after completing a combing operation. As he passed Ratna Hospital, he noticed four individuals consuming alcohol inside an autorickshaw and creating a ruckus. When Jadhav confronted them, they became aggressive. ‘We know you’re a cop, but not from here, so don’t try to lecture us,’ they reportedly warned before dragging him into the rickshaw and assaulting him.”
Police sources say that the attackers even attempted to kill Jadhav by hitting on his head with a stone. After managing to escape, he captured photos of the attackers on his mobile phone, which they later snatched from him. The phone is yet to be recovered.
Vijayanand Patil, Senior Police Inspector (Chaturshringi Police Station), speaking to The Free Press Journal, said, “Three accused have been arrested on February 16. One remains absconding, and police are searching for him. Jadhav was sent for a medical examination. Later, the FIR was registered on February 16, causing a delay in registering the complaint. The matter is under investigation.”
Meanwhile, the most alarming aspect of the incident is that despite knowing Jadhav was a police officer, the assailants showed no fear, behaving like hardened criminals.
