India has expressed deep concern over the dramatic escalation in Venezuela following the capture of President Nicolas Maduro by the United States military on January 3, 2026. The Ministry of External Affairs issued a statement on 4th January saying that the recent developments in Venezuela are a matter of deep concern.

The statement addresses the US-led strikes that resulted in the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, who were subsequently transferred to New York to face longstanding narco-terrorism charges. “We are closely monitoring the evolving situation,” the MEA statement said.

The ministry said that India reaffirms its support to the well-being and safety of the people of Venezuela. “We call upon all concerned to address issues peacefully through dialogue, ensuring peace and stability of the region,” the MEA added.

The ministry also said that the Embassy of India in Venezuelan capital Caracas is in contact with members of the Indian community and will continue to provide all possible assistance. India maintains diplomatic relations with Venezuela and has historically advocated for political solutions in the country’s prolonged crisis.

The Indian Embassy in Caracas has also issued an advisory asking Indians not to travel to Venezuela for non-essential purposes. The embassy advised all Indians in the country to exercise extreme caution, restrict their movements, and remain in contact with the embassy.

This comes amid global reactions to the unprecedented US operation, which has drawn criticism for setting a “dangerous precedent” from figures including UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, while opposition leaders in Venezuela celebrated Maduro’s removal and are pushing for exiled opposition leader Edmundo González to assume power. However, Vice President Delcy Rodriguez has taken charge of the country as acting president on the orders of the Supreme Court.

In a press conference yesterday, Donald Trump had said that US will run Venezuela till a proper transition of power can take place. However, Delcy Rodriguez has rejected the suggestion, saying that Maduro remained Venezuela’s legitimate leader despite his capture by US. She has accused the United States of launching an illegal invasion under false pretences for regime change in the country.
